Why is the engine warning light flashing? Causes, meaning & what to do now
If a yellow symbol in the shape of an engine lights up when you start your vehicle, this is the engine warning light (EWL). This engine symbol is one of the most important warning indicators in the vehicle. If it only lights up briefly and then goes out again, this is completely normal – the system carries out a self-test every time the engine is started.
The engine light flashes: Possible causes:
However, if the light stays on or starts to flash, you should pay attention. In this case, there is usually a fault in the engine or exhaust system.
A light that stays on continuously can have various causes.
These are, among others:
- Faulty sensor values (e.g. lambda probe or air flow meter)
- Problems with the fuel injection or ignition system
- An unbalanced air-fuel ratio
What to do when the light is flashing
Special care must be taken if the light is flashing. This often indicates misfiring, where unburned fuel enters the catalytic converter and can damage it.
In such cases, you should:
- Reduce the vehicle speed
- Avoid strong acceleration
- Have the vehicle checked in a workshop as soon as possible
The exact cause can be determined by reading out the fault memory. Do not ignore the warning, otherwise expensive consequential damage may occur.
Regular maintenance of the fuel system is recommended to prevent problems. Deposits can affect the function of injectors and pump and lead to long-term malfunctions. Targeted cleaning with suitable fuel additives can help keep the system clean and ensure long-term engine performance.
