A thorough cleaning is the only solution against such an infestation. The evaporator is particularly affected. Condensation creates a pleasant environment for bacteria and mold, which multiply here and catapulted into the passenger compartment by the blowers.
For this reason, the A/C system should be disinfected at least once a year, preferably in spring before the season when the A/C is in most frequent use. Cleaning every six months, i.e. in spring and autumn, would be even better.
