Inaugural Music City Grand Prix Tears Through the Streets of Nashville

We trekked to Nashville, TN for the inaugural Music City Grand Prix with the Stevens-Miller Race team in their hunt for a 3rd straight championship. The race had everything a fan could want: long, fast, wide straightaways as well as tight, technical sections. With over 40 cars taking the field we expected a lot of drama, and a lot of time under caution. Remarkably, that wasn’t the case.
To describe the entire race in one word: shootout. It truly was the top 4-5 cars in a seemingly constant battle for the lead, with driver of the Stevens-Miller Chevy Camaro, Mike Skeen, losing and regaining the lead multiple times. Dubbed “The Machine,” Mike is as cool, calm, and collected as you could hope for a driver to be. When asked what he thought about the course after the first practice, he grew a slight grin and said “I’ve always really liked road courses.” To translate that to “Machine” terms, he was excited and road courses were probably his favorite type of track, so he was very confident going into the race.
There was all sorts of drama, with Adam Andretti taking the lead at one point, but having to pull into the pits with a belt issue. That allowed Mike Skeen to take the lead, but not without contest. Thomas Merrill had a late race push, and after a caution with what would be 3 laps to go, was on Mike Skeen’s bumper like glue, waiting for any kind of mistake that might let him take the lead. Fortunately for Skeen, Stevens-Miller Racing, and for us, that mistake never came, as Mike Skeen took the checkered flag.
The race had everything a fan could want, entertainment (there were multiple concerts), a challenging track, and late race drama. It was a great event that saw Skeen tear away at the lead for points, and is now less than 20 points behind the lead with just 3 races to go. It was one for the books, and if you weren’t there or watching, you truly missed out on some amazing racing. We look forward to next year’s race, and hopefully, the same result!
