Kristian Poulsen from LIQUI MOLY Team Engstler defended in Suzuka his lead in the Independents' ranking.
In Japan LIQUI MOLY Team Engstler earns important points for the World Touring Car Championship
It was a turbulent weekend, the premiere of the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) at the Suzuka International Racing Course. Even the start was difficult: after only a few metres the first cars spun off the track, hurling debris all around. Nevertheless Kristian Poulsen from LIQUI MOLY Team Engstler managed to defend his lead in the Independents’ ranking and also Franz Engstler himself earned valuable points.Just after a few seconds the first race was over for a number of drivers. Still on the home stretch Volvo driver Robert Dahlgren (Polestar) took off, after the first bend Tom Coronel (ROAL), Tiago Monteiro (Sunred) and Gabriele Tarquini (Lukoil-Sunred) were forced to quit the race prematurely – after a severe collision. The other drivers struggled to avoid the debris on the track. When the safety car left the course, Danish Kristian Poulsen fought his way from 14th position to 5th. In the Independents’ ranking he finished second. Only his countryman Michel Nykaer was faster. Franz Engstler started at 17th position and finished 11th being 7th of the Independents.
In the second race Engstler fought bravely and finished 11th again (6th of the Independents). Team mate Poulsen finished 10th this time.
In the overall ranking Poulsen is now 7th and team captain Franz Engstler 9th. In the Independents’ ranking Poulsen defended his lead and stays being the best driver having now 111 points. Engstler has 88 points and is fourth. Even better is the situation in the Independents’ team scoring where the LIQUI MOLY team Engstler has 192 points which means a comfortable lead to the second one with 48 points less.
In two weeks, there are the next two races in China.
